Fairfax County’s GIS and Mapping Branch

Mr. Conry is the manager of Fairfax County’s GIS and Mapping Branch.  With a staff of 20, the Branch provides a full range of services to all County agencies.  The Branch has developed the web-based My Neighborhood application and is assisting in the implementation of a new Computer Aided Dispatch system.  The Branch also provides GIS support to the Office of Emergency Management and to the Public Safety agencies.   GIS manages and maintains the County’s spatial data warehouse, which contains over 50 million data elements on the 395 square mile area of Fairfax County.  Fairfax has over 1 million residents, over 344,000 parcels, 327,000 addresses, over 250,000 buildings, 3,700 miles of roads and 3,000 miles of sewer.  The Fairfax County GIS has received national and international recognition.  ESRI awarded the county two separate Special Achievement Awards for its enterprise GIS.  It has received recognition from NACO, and recently through Governing Magazine’s Government Performance Project Fairfax County overall was awarded the top score, and GIS was specifically recognized.  NACo recognized Fairfax for its cutting edge GIS work involving citizens directly in the reapportionment process using GIS.  The county received the Virginia Governor's Technology Gold Award for Local Government use of GIS in refuse collection.  And most recently from FOSE 2005. 

Mr. Conry has over 24 years of experience in information systems, over 12 years of experience in GIS, and over 8 years in Fairfax County.  Prior to joining Fairfax County in January 1999, Mr. Conry worked in private industry for over 17 years.  He specialized in applying and integrating information systems and GIS into performance and decision-enhancing desktop systems. He has written and spoken on the integration of GIS with other systems such as the World Wide Web to save cost and to provide performance enhancing-features to desktop systems.  He has managed systems development projects for clients such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defense, as well as for corporate systems.  He has advanced degrees in both Chemistry and Computer Science.  Mr. Conry was the Conference Chair for URISA’s 41th International Conference on GIS in 2003.  He recently served as the Chairperson of COG’s Regional GIS Managers’ Committee.
