Col. Jeffrey A. Bedey is Commander of the Hurricane Protection Office (HPO) in New Orleans, La., a position he assumed on June 1, 2006. Col. Bedey oversees one of the most massive civil works projects in U.S. history: construction of the federal flood protection system that protects the city of New Orleans and southeast Louisiana. The major focus of this multi-billion dollar project is the rebuilding of flood-control structures damaged during Hurricane Katrina and the construction of new structures and pump stations to protect the area in the future.

Before his assignment to New Orleans, Bedey was the Omaha District Commander and District Engineer, a position he held since July 2004. Prior to his position in Omaha, he was assigned to Quaid-I-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he earned a master’s degree in defense and strategic studies. Bedey also earned a Master of Science degree in construction management from Colorado State University in December 1991 and a Bachelor of Science degree in construction engineering from Montana State University in March 1983.

On March 18, 1983, Bedey received his commission through ROTC as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From 1983 to 1985, he was assigned platoon leader, company executive officer and battalion maintenance officer in the 78th Engineer Battalion, in Ettlingen, Germany. From 1985 to 1986, Bedey served as aide-de-camp to the deputy commanding general, VII Corps, Mohringen, Germany; and from 1986 to 1987, he was aide-de-camp to the commanding general, White Sands Missile Range, in New Mexico.

From 1987 to 1990, Bedey served as assistant operations officer and then Bravo Company commander in the 15th Engineer Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash. Following graduate school, Bedey served from 1992 to 1994 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, as a project engineer at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, and later as a project manager in Sacramento, Calif.

From 1995 to 1996, Bedey served as Battalion Executive Officer in the 62d Engineer Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas. From 1996 to 1997, he served as 13th COSCOM Engineer, Fort Hood, Texas; and from 1997 to 1999 he was the Engineer Lieutenant Colonel Assignment Officer at Total Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Va.

From 1999 to 2001, Bedey commanded the 299th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, in Fort Hood, Texas. Following that, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Engineer School, in Fort Leonardwood, Mo., where he served as the director of instruction

His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Fort Belvoir, Va.; the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and the Pakistani National Defense College, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Col. Bedey’s awards and decorations include the Legion Of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
