About this Workshop:
The purpose of this interactive and specialized workshop is to provide first responders
with techniques and strategies to safely handle crises involving or caused by cross-cultural
or racial conflicts. Do you know how to manage and avoid escalating dangerous circumstances
such as riots, demonstrations, domestic violence, neighborhood conflicts involving
people from different backgrounds? Content includes real-life dangerous situations
with different cultures. Attendees will have an opportunity to practice their skills
during simulations.
What You Will Learn:
- Benefits of actively applying cultural competence in the field
- How misunderstanding, biases and stereotypes get in the way
of successful responses
- Strategies and techniques to prepare yourself in advance and improve
personal skills
- How to increase effective two-way communication
in a variety of cross-cultural crises-related situations
- How to avoid escalating potentially dangerous situations
Attendees for this workshop will walk away with:
- An understanding of racially and culturally related conflict and violence (community,
domestic, workplace, etc.)
- Strategies to use in challenging situations that have or could escalate to violence
- Easy-to-recall communications techniques to use in various dangerous circumstances
- Techniques to help yourself and other to remain calm, reduce anger
- Guidelines to avoid escalation
- Applications to realistic situations

This session is designed for individuals on the front line responsible for responding
quickly and appropriately to emergencies, threats, crises and disasters in which
people from different cultural groups are involved.
First responders include:
- Law enforcement personnel, firefighters, 911 operators
- Emergency and security personnel in medical settings, schools, defense
industries
- Government personnel on the front line

CANCELLATION POLICY: You may designate a substitute in writing any time before the
event. Cancellation requests must be sent in writing (email or fax) and will be
subject to a $100 processing fee. No cancellations or transfers are accepted within
2 (two) weeks prior to the event start date or later. PLEASE NOTE: No shows will
be liable for the entire registration fee. In the rare occasion that an event is
cancelled or postponed, please note our reimbursement is limited to paid tuition
only.

Workshop Location:
The workshop will be held in the Homeland Defense Training & Publishing (A Division
of Government Horizons Global Inc.) Training Center in the Jefferson Plaza Building
at 1421 Jefferson Davis Highway (7th floor), Arlington, VA 22202. Public parking
at the facility is available for $10.00 early morning special (before 8:00am) or
$18.00 all day. The Jefferson Plaza Building is just two blocks from the Crystal
City Metro Station on the blue and yellow line. Please note: the parking garage
is located on Crystal Drive.
